The Project
Adamson Construction worked directly for a client to excavate a trench to connect a data centre with 8 fibre optic telecommunications cables and 2x 5kw HV cables to the national grid. The trench was to be backfilled and tarmacked. The project also involved the concrete bases for two large generators and the footings for a steel structure that incorporated 16 concrete pads.
The job was carried out on a busy private industrial estate and the trench holding the cables was straight down the middle of the road. There were also a huge amount of existing services in the ground. The ground was also relatively soft at the point loads where the concrete pads would be supporting the steel structure.
The trench had to be excavated in stages to allow traffic to flow adequately through the estate and ducts were installed which would then have the cables pulled through them. A considerable amount of the trench had to be carefully hand dug to avoid damaging the services which were completed successfully. The bases and the pads were installed to an engineer’s drawing and the pads were dug to
a depth of 2 metres to support the steel structure.
