Wet Room Conversion

Case Study: 18253

Value
£20,000

Location
Ward 5, Wexham Park Hospital

Contract Length
3 weeks

Types of Work Involved:

Demolition / Ground works / Concreting / Screeding / Plumbing / Electrical / Flooring / Carpentry / Wall cladding / Decoration

The Task:

The Trust had identified that the bathroom was no longer suitable for the Wards requirements. The Trust’s maintenance teams were bi-weekly flushing the waste and outlets in accordance with HTM (Health Technical Memorandum) 04-01, paragraph 5.12.

The Trust decided that Installation of a new disabled wet room was required. It was to be HBN (Health Building Note), and HTM compliant and to include a disabled WC and sink. The wet room was to be used by Ambulant, Semi-Ambulant and Disabled patients. The Trust therefore would convert this room into a new use, thus preventing further infection control maintenance issues regarding the flushing of waste outlets and hot and cold services.

The Problem:

The room had been fitted out as bathroom-only with a very large cast iron bath set into the floor and surrounded by a resin type (Terrazzo) coating, around the bath and all the walls. A large set of concrete steps needed to be removed with hydraulic breakers. Asbestos based cement was known to be present in the floor. There were no services within the room to allow for sewage waste. The ward remained live throughout the duration of the works. All aspects of the project had to be carefully controlled to not affect or put at risk the patients, visitors, staff, or contractors.

The Solution:

Firstly, we measured the space to see if it was suitable for a wet room installation, in accordance with guidance notes. We designed the IPS (Integrated Plumbing System) panelled units and drew up some plans for approval from the IPC (Infection Prevention Control) team, the client and the end-users in the ward. Once this was agreed a programme of works was compiled, detailing the days that there would be noisy works so that all in the ward were informed, throughout the duration of the contract, of any disturbance that may occur.

We erected a screen partition to create a change area between the works and the live ward.

Signage and a tack mat were positioned to prevent dust ingress into the live ward. The space was decanted and all resin cladding was demolished and the large bath was demolished, being too big and heavy to move in one piece. All waste was bagged into rubble sacks and disposed of. Prior to the floor being broken up, an approved asbestos removal company was actioned to remove all asbestos and provide a certificate of re-occupation.

The concrete steps were demolished. A trench was excavated and penetrations made below ground and through an outside wall where it was then continued to the nearest sewage waste manhole.

All underground pipe-work was installed including sewage and hot and cold water feeds. The floor was screeded to allow for falls and cross falls away from the entrance and to the shower waste outlet, where a wet room shower tray was installed.

Altro white rock hygienic wall cladding was then installed to all walls and Altro safety flooring to the floors. IPS panels were then scribed and installed to all walls for the shower, sink and disabled WC. These were plumbed in and tested. New lighting suitable for a wet room was installed with an emergency light fitting.

Decorations were completed using an anti-fungal/anti-bacterial paint.

All Doc-M (Building Regulations) fittings were installed including hand rails, grab rails, drop-down grab rails and anti-ligature shower curtain, as well as blinds fitted to the windows.

All works were carried out in line with HTM and HBN guidelines and with the IPC teams approval.

Temporary change area was dismantled and the client inspected the works prior to contract sign off.
