Installation of Disabled access Wet Room.
We were actioned to install a wet room within a live day ward into a former WC, to enable the ward to have the facility to become an Escalation Ward. The duration of the works could not exceed 10 days in order for the Trust to meet its capabilities. The ward is live and there needed to be considerable breaking out of the concrete base, so noisy, vibration and dusty work control was essential and needed to be planned-in and all end-users needed to be informed as to when these intrusive parts of the project were to be carried out.
Firstly a design was compiled in accordance with HBN (Health Building Note) and HTM (Health Technical Memorandum) and agreed with the Trust’s IPC (Infection Prevention control) team, Ward Matron and the client.
On commencement of the works a screen was erected to form a change area and buffer zone between site and patient areas. Tack mats were installed as added dust control and all existing sanitary ware, flooring and IPS panels (Integrated Plumbing System) were decanted from the room and disposed of.
The floor screed was broken up and removed, and the concrete broken up to enable fitment of the Wet room shower Tray. All first fix underground pipe work was installed and connections made to existing services and tested before the infill.
The floor was screeded to create falls and cross falls away from the door and to the shower waste.
Altro safety wet room floor was installed with 100mm up-stand and cap and cove. Trovex hygienic wall cladding was installed around the shower tray.
IPS panels were then installed for the shower, clinical wash basin and Disabled WC, before being tested.
New wet room lighting was fitted with an emergency fitting. A new extract fan was installed and vented to the outside.
All walls and ceilings were painted with Dulux Sterisheild, anit-microbial/fungicidal eggshell paint.
Doc-M (Building Regulations) hand rails, drop down and grab rails were installed as well as soap dispensers, paper towel and hand sanitisers. All joints were sealed with silicon.
IPC, end-user and client inspections took place before contract sign off.
The screen was disassembled after deep clean.
