FLOOR PREPARATION

Adamson Construction have over 25 years of success installing flooring systems. We look at both the short term goals and long term value of all projects.

All floors will need to be prepared to some degree, regardless of the floor material or type of finish required on the floor. Adamson Flooring has vast experience in preparing floors and will advise you and carry out the work required to prepare the floor for the flooring finish you desire.

The floor will either be new or existing. A new floor substrate will usually be concrete or screed and will generally only need the laitance removed and possibly a primer used to ensure the bond is good. The priming of the floor for most finishes is essential but Adamson Flooring will make sure the appropriate priming is done to ensure there is no de-bonding later down the line.

Existing floors need to be considered carefully to ensure the final finish is acceptable as a prominent cause of poorly laid floors is because the existing surface is not prepared properly. The substrate will be examined and tests may be conducted to evaluate its condition and if any work has to be done such as replacement or repair this will be specified. If the substrate is acceptable the surface may still require preparation. The main types of surface preparation are:

• Grinding
• Shotblasting
• Planing/Scabbling
• Stripping

Grinding is a process where diamond heads or plates rotate in a circular motion to grind the floor consistently. They can be very fine grinding plates to smooth concrete and to polish terrazzo granite and concrete or more abrasive to remove paint and coatings and to level a concrete substrate which has been left rough or lightly damaged. This is the best way to get a floor ready for the thinner seals and coatings (Type 1-3) if a smooth finish is desired.

Shotblasting is when a steel shot is propelled at high velocity by a rotation wheel within the machine body onto the floor to produce a profile for the application of the resin flooring. It will clean and remove paints, sealants and laitance and create a texture for the resin floor material to stick to and even create slip resistant properties when a thin coating is applied.

Planing/Scabbling is usually carried out to remove materials in excess of 1mm such as latex or multiple layers of old coatings. It is also the quickest way to reduce levels however it may create a more profiled, uneven floor which must be considered in preparation for the final floor. The machine works by a drum rotating at high speed with in the body of the unit. The level of abrasion depends on the accessories fitted to the drum.

Stripping is simply where a machine is used to remove floor coverings such as carpet, vinyl, laminate, ceramic and stone tiles, as well as some self-levelling floors and latex. When the stripping is complete a secondary method such as grinding, shotblasting or planning may need to be done to prepare the floor for the actual finish.

We are fully committed to ensuring you receive the very best customer care and our experienced, well supported management and workforce consistently deliver to an excellent standard. Safety and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do for you.
